Requests for legal service increase to 90% amid latest lockdowns
Recent data suggests that requests for legal advice have increased by 90 per cent since late 2019, which signifies that despite the COVID-19 disparities such as communication breakdowns and immense financial pressures together with the on and off lockdowns, many have equally sought legal help.
According to the Australian government, The Law Council believes that the system which delivers access to justice should be; fair; just in the results that it delivers; accessible to the people who need to use it; responsive to their needs; and properly resourced. All Australians have, under the law, the right to seek justice.
The new figures found that along with a 78 per cent increase of people seeking access to violence prevention services and an 81 per cent increase in psychological support, the requests for legal advice have significantly risen to 90 per cent.
Co-founder, mediator and barrister Jack Whelan sighted that the lockdowns were taking a toll on relationships and the larger Australian families. Families are facing unprecedented moments and many are forced to make huge life decisions. He has urged families to make fully informed decisions.
He added that especially concerning is the increased number of people seeking access to violence prevention services, making access to discrete and effective support even more important.
Chief executive Angela Harbinson mirrored the violence prevention services, adding that services are more important than ever as families see an increase in the burden of homeschooling children, the ongoing pressures of working from home and away from support networks, communication breakdowns and immense financial pressures.
“Our message is the same: make sure you get the support you need to make the best decisions you can in your own unique circumstances,” she said.
